Till just a few days back, the industry was smiling with the blockbuster success of ‘Raajneeti’. However, the smiles have vanished all over again with ‘Raavan’ turning out to be disaster at the box office. Wait, before we delve into the box office fate of the film, let’s also talk about the film by itself. The fact remains that this Mani Ratnam directed film is disastrous even from the content and execution perspective. Certain films have good content but get marred by poor execution. Some films have a decent execution but the script doesn’t contain much meat to take them through. However, when the combination of both these factors turns out to be poor, there is nothing that can salvage the situation.
There were reports of Sussanne, Hrithik Roshan’s wife, opening her own interior designing store in Bandra, which would be inaugurated by Shah Rukh Khan. As per her own tweets, the store is all set to open in the month of October (approximately), and she has already come up with a name for it, which is yet to be revealed as she is not ready.
The reports, however, also included that Sussanne has decorated the house of her buddy Gauri Khan, the wife of King Khan. However Sussanne claimed these are reports to be false.
‘Kites’ has failed and in fact failed big time! If the first weekend was terrific (though not as superb as the paid previews and opening Friday), the weekdays saw a total fall as predicted.
The first three days of the movie saw 30 crores net in collections while the remaining four days of the week, struggled to accumulate even 10 crores more, something which Kites had managed on a single Friday. This pretty much tells the tale that the film has been totally rejected by the audience.
Kites has gained mixed reviews in India but seems that people in North America have loved the movie so much so that it has made it to the top ten on their charts. The film, even pre release, was in the news most of the time for varied reasons like the intimate scenes between Barbara and Hrithik, and the climax being leaked out pre release, but did not really live up to the expectations of the audiences in India critically.
In Bollywood, movies come and go like birds, some make a place for themselves, some fly away leaving no sign of their arrival. Today, Bollywood films are all about strategic marketing, they leave no stone unturned promoting movies, and every single person in the film becomes a part of the marketing plan. But over the years, there has been a serious case of over hyped movies being a major disappointment. The marketing strategies are such that all you do is hear and see about the movie, till the point it sickens you!
While the entire world was going gaga (rightly so) over the fact that ‘Kites’ was all set to take the biggest opening of the season, it was only at this column where slight apprehension around the state of affairs was first highlighted last week. It came with a reason too rather than any element of cynicism. Yes, given the hype around the film, star power of Hrithik Roshan and obvious excitement of seeing Barbara Mori on screen, ‘Kites’ was always all set to be a big summer outing. However, too many cooks in case of ‘Kites’ did make one fear if the dish would be spoiled, case in point being ‘Trimurti’ which was mentioned in last week’s column.
Kites- Film disappoints, Hrithik doesn’t
Rating: 2 out of 5*
Starring: Hrithik Roshan, introducing Barbara Mori, Kangana Ranaut, Nicholas Brown, Anand Tiwari and Kabir Bedi
Director: Anurag Basu
Hrithik Roshan’s Kites may make his fans very happy by the way he has been presented (and he enacted) in the film but those looking out for a never seen been before experience that was promised through its mega marketing blitzkrieg will be in for a major disappointment.
J. (Hrithik Roshan) is a dance teacher in Las Vegas, who is also in the business of marrying illegal immigrants in order for them to get green cards. While being at his dance class, a rich casino heiress Gina (Kangana Ranaut) falls for her dance instructor.
As things stand today, ‘Kites’ should take one of the biggest opening of the year so far. There is no reason why this Hrithik Roshan starrer shouldn’t find itself in the same bracket as ‘Housefull’ and ‘My Name Is Khan’, the two films that have hovered around the 30 crore mark as far as the first weekend collections in India are concerned. While it is a given that Hrithik will break the record of ‘Dhoom 2’ as far as opening is concerned, it has to be seen that what kind of distance does the film travels after the first weekend euphoria is over.
An arrival of a Hrithik Roshan film is an event in itself, just as is in case of Aamir Khan starrers. Add to that the exclusivity tag that he comes with and one can pretty much foresee a huge film here from the house of Roshans. Hrithik’s last full fledged appearance was in ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ which came two years back though he did have an extended guest appearance in ‘Luck By Chance’ a year back. Now is the time for his fans to see him in all his glory and the kind of promotional built up which this Anurag Basu directed film has seen over last one year, it can be safely assumed that ‘Kites’ will see at least 80% opening.
