Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Disappoints

I think Yash Raj has lost it. Except an odd Chak De, all their recent movies are hopeless. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is another disaster. I was expecting a good movie by Parineeta director, Pradeep Sarkar, but he disappoints big time. If it was not for Rani Mukherjee, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is unwatchable. Critics are unanimous in dismissing Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.

Rediff says: Ah, so few films are fun anymore. I saw one where the ensemble cast was spot-on, with some standout performances, the script clever enough to evoke authentic laughs — a genuine rarity in Indian cinema today, sadly — and, while some of the plot was stuck in been-there-done-that predictability, there were a couple of sparkling moments of true wit.

Oh, how I wish I could keep writing about Loins Of Punjab Presents. Unfortunately, after sitting through a half-full theatre on opening day (my regular ticket-blacker laughed, pointing me to the opening counter minutes before the first show) for Pradeep Sarkar’s Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, I’m forced to agree that movie too merits a review. Radiosargam says: Yash Raj Banners gave a script written by Aditya Chopra to director Pradeep Sarkar of Parineeta fame in quest of a hard hitting realistic tale. However, this procedure has resulted in a film which has lost out at the very root level of storytelling and uniqueness. Bollywood has already explored the subject of prostitution in many films. Needless to say that much was expected out of this Pradeep Sarkar-Yash Raj-Rani Mukherjee combo. I particularly feel pity for the director who chose to make a film within a predictable frame of storytelling.
