Over a freewheeling conversation with Lipika Varma Ayesha disclosed her trip down the memory lane and revealed how Aisha happened to her.

So follows Ayesha on Aisha:

On how Aisha happened-

I met Sonam at the Dubai Film Festival few years ago through a mutual friend, and we really hit it off. We are very alike in our style likes and dislikes. We are on the same wavelength. Sonam was somewhat familiar with my work, but I showed her the collection at the time, and she fell in love with it! A few months later, Rhea (Sonam’s sister) and Sonam called me to ask if I would be interested in doing some of the clothes for their movie ‘Aisha.’ They briefed me about the movie and the project seemed very exciting to me. It was the first film project for me in India, and because it was Sonam, who I adore, I agreed. It has been a real pleasure working on this project.

On brief given on the costumes for Aisha-

Very important factor was that the clothes were not to be costumes (strangely but the credits will role down with me as the ‘Costume Designer’). They had to represent the style sensibilities of a modern and a stylish woman, and be relatable, believable yet high on fashion. I was also asked to adhere to my own signature style that is feminine and ethereal clothes, which are very much part of my collections. I did also design some ensembles specifically for Sonam Kapoor.

On the costumes for Sonam and Lisa Haydon-

They required clothes for both Sonam Kapoor and Lisa Haydon, but I’m not sure eventually who wore what. I can’t wait for the movie to be released to find out for myself!

On Sonam’s style sensibility-

Sonam Kapoor is absolutely the perfect clotheshorse! She exudes grace and style, and she suits my designs perfectly. She is feminine, strong and someone who has just got it! I adore her.

On experience with movie unit-

The movie is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Emma,’ and Sonam and Lisa’s characters are very much in the vein of the original book. Sonam plays the stylish and the beautiful woman whose life’s agenda is to matchmaker! Lisa plays the shy demure ingénue, who is a diamond in the rough, and who becomes Sonam’s character’s pet project, a project to turn her from a withering wallflower, into a beautiful object of desire.

I initially traveled to Mumbai to meet Sonam, Rhea and the team for detailed briefs, but I wasn’t able to fly to the sets because of my busy work schedule. However I did catch up with the team in Delhi while they were shooting Film making is a hard work and I was intrigued by how professional they all are.
