Pritam says he is not a Copy Cat

pritam music composerI always thought that Anu Malik is the king in ripping tunes from other languages, but our happening music composer, Pritam, proves me wrong and overtakes Anu in every possible way. I know that our Bollywood composers copy from English, and sometimes Arabic, but our Pritam has not even spared the Koreans and Indonesians. What a personality! For more detailed analysis of his copy-cat ventures, check this website.

Pritam speaks to BollywoodHungama on his ripping of Anggun’s French number in Jab We Met:

I’ve never denied the sources for my songs. So why should I deny it now? But the fact is, I had never heard Anggun’s song when I composed the song in Jab We Met. I don’t know the song myself. My friend who’s a keyboard player had the groove programmed. I liked the groove and I composed my tune on it. I composed the song in front of so many people. I can guarantee the melody isn’t anyone’s but my own. I must admit the groove is similar to the one in my song. But that’s it. And too to is totally unintentional. Not a note in the rest of my song sounds like Anggun’s tune. And if anyone can prove I’ve copied her song I’m ready to stop composing songs forever.

Yep, this is the first time such a thing has happened to Pritam. Every time it’s his friend who copies the music and poor Pritam is blamed. I agree. I even agree that if someone gives him the proof, he would stop composing music forever. I trust every word of Mr. Pritam.

In fact, let me tell you my songs in Mukesh Bhatt’s forthcoming film, Jannat, which I had claimed were completely original are no longer so. Some parts of the soundtrack now have borrowed sounds.

There he goes! I know that Pritam cannot come up with anything original, and since he knows that he will be caught in no time by us, he is openly accepting. Smart move, Mr. Copy-Cat!

But ‘Yeh Ishq Haye’ in Jab We Met is an absolute original.

Yeah, yeah, it is absolutely original.

I know that it’s difficult for Mr. Pritam to create original tracks, but at least he should give credit to the original composer on the music cover.

i cant understand whats so wrong if sum1 takes a foreign tune and composes a song on it…bsides if he had not used those tunes as a reference then we wud hav missed out on so many gr8 songs and why blame him alone the site link u hav provided u hav provided lists most of the luminaries of Indian music including the gr8 RD Burman and A.R.Rehman!! ..so just imagine how many gud songs we wud hav missed…bsdes i feel its wrong to blame any music composer if the tunes r lifted for songs in mahesh bhatt’s films cos its a known fact that they force the music composers to lift tunes and rework them to Indian tastes and judging by the fantastic music every bhatt film guarantees atleast I M not complaining!!!

I completely back Hrishikesh, the song Knocking on the heavens door was sung by ten different artists, its renditioned differently. and the copyrights are so very nascent in India, i guess, Pritam is a soft target, since he does not defend. And the parameters of huge money in the movies is involved, what if he’s pressurised, we only see the superficial front news, there are layers of truth behind it!

But then due credit should be given beforehand for cover version and also due permissions obtained if necessary. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door was undoubtedly sung by so many bands, but then no body claimed it to be their own and gleefully accepted any awards that some ignorant groups might have bestowed upon them for their ‘original scores.’

He should stop calling himself a music director and better me termed as a music arranger.

Ok..find it pretty strange to see so many ppl supporting Pritam or the larger picture “plagarism”…ok think about it..bollywood is longer just mumbai bangalore or patiala…its global…its being played on streets of San Deigo and clubs of London…and think abt an outsider listening to something like Gela Gela song (Akshay and kareena)..only to realise its a R Kelley song..and puts it off saying tis disgusting…come on guys..there has to be originality and something which has to unique..if we need to get a global audience for Indian Music…or ya as others told above..”we” wud have missed out on many songs if not for plagarism…ya we can keep listening and keep enjoying and let rest of world treat us as copy cats…

There is no doubt that from last few years Pritam is giving best musics in Bollywood. I agree some of his tunes are similar with others, but see the bis office. After all his 90% musics are successful. Music is not a science where you have to deliver a unique product. Even every singer follow the same music mantra SAREGAMAPA, may be in different languages. I can 100% confirm that no single song in the world is unique at his own. If you use some special software you can find out some tune are similar with other song. This is because whatever musical instruments are used are more common , only thing is some sur is different. But that can never be unique. Music is for entertaintment. So don’t target Pritam or any other musicians if they are really entertaining you , your family , your frends etc. Instead we should all praise him for his fatastic efforts.

Everybodu gets inspired with

if you lift one or two its fine.. or maybe the beat or part of the tune.. but copying the song entirely..and doing it everytime.. thats really bad..
copy cats like pritam should be prisoned for life for ever.. or be banned from the music industry.. he is a disgrace to the indian music industry.. he can mislead the world that indians dont have any originiality..

i just dont get it… u guys are losers… i refer to those of who seems to blame pritam for everything he’s done till now.. cant u get the point here?? he’s brought really well rendered music from around the world and we enjoyed it throughout the last year. without him we would have to have been listening to s**t from the industry (leave alone ar rahman, shanker mahadevan and the lot). this guys done the work beautifully. if you think that this guy is a criminal or that of a sort, stop listening to him, its ur ears rite, close it if you feel irritated… and if u think ur so perfect, go make some music then.. who is stopping u … and one day you yourself will also be flicking from somwhere…u bloody b@$ket of fL0w3rs,,,

If there’s nothing with copying music, movie ideas, and scenes then I’m sure bollywood won’t mind people pirating their movies and music. It might just be hypocrisy if they do.

Pritam used to be in bengali Rock band named “chandrabindoo” earlier. He has ruined the hard earned reputation of bengali rock bands copying shamelessly from other bands or singers.its right to steal until you are caught..but when you are caught you will be called a mere thief. So its ok for pritam to steal tunes from other bands but getting the best musician award for songs based on others stuff is just sick.and u ppl who are supporting him are not true music lovers..u r just like the rikshaw pullers over there for whom any song goes..entertainment is the main thing for them..shameless indians..thats what we indians are called..a bunch of hypocrites.

My dear friends and great music lovers, who told you that Pritam has copied full songs.Listen carefully to all the so called pritam copies and the so called originals, both completely[that is from beginning to end carefully].You will find that Pritam’s no song is 100% copied. At most we can say that only 20-0% his songs are copied from others .Such 20% and even greater copies are also been done by other famous music directors of this generation, but thier copies are not brought out in public, maybe, because these people are very influential and well established persons as compared to pritam, who is relatively new and outsider to this industry, but still his albums are selling like hot cakes, beating out the albums scored by our other established music directors and in a way inviting their wrath upon him as they are afraid of him. Moreover, copying is present not only in bollywood, but in the whole world from time immemorial. Also with millions of songs being present in the whole world with just seven sur to make all of them them, songs are bound to sound heavily similar to each other, which people sometimes think as copies. Also,I would like to add that such 20%copied songs cannot be called copies. At best, they can be called similar or inspired, and we all know we all get inspired by others and others also gets inspired by us from time to time.Inspiration only makes one’s life better and such is also the case with music. Thus such kind of inspiration only enriches the music of the whole world. And finally,I would like to tell all my friends and great music lovers, that its only due to such inspirations, similarities and 20%copies,that few cases are fought over which is the original song or which is the copied/inspired song or over copyright of a song. And till a song is not proved copied in a court, till then one must assume that the song is not copied and one should not malign the name of the composer in question in public and behave according to the old famous court line”INNOCENT TILL NOT PROVED GUILTY”.

OMG, I can’t believe it, you guys are so disgusting. You defend a thief like Pritam. You are as immoral as Pritam.

@Manjeet, FYI, there are many songs from which Pritam copied the tune 100%. Just because you don’t know it (yet) doesn’t mean Pritam is innocent. Forty five copied songs in his few years career should put him in the list of world worst copy-cat. He should be jailed. He is a disgrace to Indian music industry. Imagine if you are an Indian living overseas and proudly show your latest “beautiful music” to your friends from other countries only to be laughed at by your friends when one of them exclaim “hey, that sounds exactly like a very popular music in my country from a long time ago”

In Pritam case the courtline should be changed into : HE IS GUILTY UNTIL HE IS PROVED TO BE INNOCENT.

Pritam is giving good music of indian taste though copied. He works in entertainment industry and his music is entertaining the masses. But, he cannot claim himself to be a music director/composer.

The problem is not in copying. Its about not giving credit to the original composure.
And to add to the insult Pritam and his league come to talent hunts as judges !!!

People just hated Abhishek Bachchan when he was copying his father.
And yet approving Pritam when he is lifting tunes from others.. hipocrites !!!

Copy, no problem in that, but pay the originator his due, and if he is not asking for money at least pay them credit !!!

Hi Guys,

Pritam is not copying the music he is buying the music and pays for the copyrigt
it is not that he is pirating(Dark Rilval this is for you), I know that u r from pirating company, why do u guys think that pritam is the whole responsible for lifting.
What about produces who insist in keeping the lifted songs, directors who suggest the song to the producers then the BOX office who makes the song top numbers do u think they are fools and dont know about the lifting, it seems u guys talk before you think, it like this Empty vessels make more noise and people who blame or comment on lifting r no different.
All we need is good music in the language that we best know not in some strange language, more over i cannot learn all languages to here the song in the original tune.

I think the Title ‘Music Director” is misleading and has lost the real meaning. Note that its “Director” not “Creator”. A person who directs the music for a particular movie is given that Title. Who says that Music Director should give music which is created by him only. Or they should be named as “Music Remaker”

In today World, with so much to do and so less a time, its very obvious that you will “get inspiration” from somewhere. Dont people collect texts from the Internet to make Projects? Its the same.

Jo bikta hai woh chalta hai. Woh bikta tab hai jab woh accha lagta hai. Aam khao - ped kyoon geente ho.

In any case how many people listen to Korean, Indonesian, French Music? Very few!! Atleast thanks to Pritam we are listening to World Music. Who has the time to listen to World Music. Just follow Pritam’s Music.

I thought Pritam was a musical genius like R D Burman, S D Burman, A R Rehman, Shankar Jai Kishen, Laxmi-Pyare. But he turned out to be the best amongst Anu Mallik, Bappi Lahiri & gang.

Whatever one says! Pritam’s music is melodious, so what if its not “created” by him. Accha copy karta hai.

Would continue to love the Music remade by him.

@hrishikesh
i am amazed to see that you are asking whats wrong in copying the music!!! dear oh dear…. people love the music but why?? because the composer has made efforts to make it as melodious as possible. so don’t you think the credit should go to the original, encouraging and appreciating his work.
and by the way, i firmly believe you do the same thing in your professional life taking credit of others work, that why you are defending a copy cat.

Pritam has been my favourite music director. However very recently i found out about this issue.
I think anyone who loves music, loves to score and compose music would 100% agree with “MusicLovers”.
The law for such things are simple and clear.
For now, Pritam should at least give the credit to the original composers. He certainly has moulded the original scores and made excellent numbers which if would not have been the case, we would have never heard these tunes.
My final verdict would be that the Original Composer should get the credit and some financial benifit based on the sales. This would make all happy and both the original composer and the new composer would share a good professional relationship and there will be PEACE.
