Has Aamir Khan Lost His Mind?

aamir khan and shahrukh khan

The following quotes were taken from Aamir Khan’s blog:

“Shahrukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more can I ask for?”
Aamir bhai, are you fantasizing about SRK again?

“Now, before you jump to any conclusions let me add that Shahrukh is the name of our dog. And before you jump to any further conclusions let me add that I had nothing to do with naming him.”

And we are supposed to believe that?

“In fact Shahrukh is the dog of the caretakers of our house. When I bought this house it came with the caretakers and their dog! Apparently Shahrukh (the actor) was shooting for a commercial in this house a few years ago, and that very day the caretakers bought a pup…, and named him Shahrukh.” Continued >>

Music Review: Dhoom Dadakka

dhoom dhadaka aarthi chabria

Director : Shashi Ranjan
Producer : Shashi Ranjan
Cast : Shaad Randhawa, Rakhi Sawant, Jackie Shroff, Chunky Pandey, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Bobby Darling, Aarti Chabbria, Shama Sikander & Sameer Dattani
Music Director : Roop Kumar Rathod
Lyricist/s : Shaqeel Azmi & Praveen Kumar Ashk
Cassettes and CD’s on : Eros Music Records
Singers : Daler Mehndi, Jaspinder Narula, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan, Roop Kumar Rathod, kalpana, Dj Sandy & Dj Prince

Seeing the suspect cast and that Roop Kumar Rathod made the music, I knew this album was hopeless. I wonder why he even makes music? Is there such a shortage of musicians that singers (such as Roop Kumar Rathod and Sukhwinder Singh) have to make music for films?

  • Dhoom Dadakka (Daler Mehndi and Jaspinder Narula) - This song does absolutely nothing to separate itself from the hundreds of other bhangra numbers out there. Nice try guys but just because you add the word dhoom to a song doesn’t mean it will be lapped up! On a side note, I do wish we hear more from Jaspinder Narula in the future. Rating: ★½☆☆☆
  • Hari Om (Sunidhi Chauhan) - Perhaps, maybe, slightly better than the first song mainly because Sunidhi’s singing. But don’t get the wrong idea - this song is also pretty bad. Rating: ★½☆☆☆
  • Ara Ra Ra Ra (Udit Narayan, Roop Kumar Rathod & Kalpana) - This is the Holi number in which will be picturized on the entire village. This song could not have sounded anymore outdated. Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

Luckily theres no more songs in the album (unless you want to give the remixes a try)

Overall Rating: ★½☆☆☆
2008 has been one of the worst years in Bollywood music-wise thanks to album like this.

Movie Review: Tashan

Tashan

After hearing so many negative ratings on this film, I thought to myself can it really be that bad? After all its a Yash Raj film starring mega stars Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor. Even if the story is weak, can’t these four join together and deliver perfomances that save the movie?

Unfortunately the answer is NO. There is way too much stupidity in the movie. Everything is predictable. The fight scenes are not believable. And worst of all, there is no story.

I don’t like giving away too much in movie reviews because that defeats the purpose of readers watching the movie. But in this movie’s case there is no story so nothing can really be given away. In short this movie is about a big don Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor) whose money gets stolen by Pooja (Kareena) and Jimmy (Saif). Thats when Bachchan (Akshay Kumar) is hired to get the money back and kill both of them. In the midst of this supposedly serious mission, we are treated to random and absurd events such as all three (Jimmy, Pooja and Bachchan) putting on costumes/wigs and dancing to Very Happy in My Heart Dil Dance Maare. You can’t help but ask yourself why are they so happy?

Up until the intermission the film is not bad. But after that it seems that the writers run out of material and change the story altogether by adding a twist that seems entirely forced and unbelievable.

The low points of the film are the two almost cartoonish action scenes (one in the middle of the movie and one at the end). The climax of the movie has unexplainable scenes such as Bhaiyyaji watering down Pooja with a huge hose (could it be that he shares the same fantasies as us?); a building being shown blown up multiple times by a single hand grenade (yet nobody inside the building is hurt); and a finale which shows Bhaiyyaji the big don leisurely riding a bicycle as if he is a delivery boy with no cares in the world (does he not know he is about to be killed?). The entire village of hundreds of people comes to shoot at our three vigilantes. But as you may have already guessed, every single person misses.

Performance wise, Akshay Kumar is in a league of his own now. He is reaching another level altogether as an actor. Had it not been for him, the second half would not even be tolerable. Kareena Kapoor looks gorgeous but she has lost too much weight. This is a type of role she has done before so she has no trouble. Saif Khan is the same as he is in every other movie. He has his usual dialogues such as “Man, your’e a dude.” All I can say about Anil Kapoor is… make sure you guys have the subtitles on when you watch this movie. He has invented a new language in this film which nobody else in the world will understand.

The songs seemed average when the music came out but they sounded somewhat better in the film. The Chaliya song officially gets hottest song ever award from me - because of Kareena’s bikini scene. She gives not only a frontal view but a rear view also. But unfortunately that once famous rear is now basically gone because of her dieting (very disappointing!) The song Dil Dance Maare was forced in but is picturized well.

The streak of flops continues for the Yash Raj camp!

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Music Review: Anamika

Movie title: Anamika

Director : Anant Mahadevan
Producer : Bhanwar Lal Sharma
Cast : Dino Morea, Minissha Lamba, Koena Mitra, Aarti Chhabria, Achint Kaur & Gulshan Grover
Music Director : Anu Malik
Lyricist/s : Sameer
Cassettes and CD’s on : Venus Records
Singers : Shaan, Krishna, Sunidhi Chauhan, & Anu Malik

Anamika

The reason this movie caught my eye is because Anu Malik is doing the music. The majority of people may believe that his best days are behind him, but I’m in the minority who thinks that he still has something left. I still remember the gold old days in the 90s when every other movie had music composed by him. Despite his heavy workload during that decade, Anu Malik was consistent in delivering hits.

In 2006 he impressed with Jaaneman and then disappointed with Zindaggi Rocks. With Jaaneman he proved (to me at least) that he still has something left in the musical bank…

  • Shagufta Dil (Shaan) - The song starts off nicely and it seems Anu Malik is really back. BUT then the part “shagufta dil” ruins everything! I am not sure what Anu Malik and/or Shaan were thinking but that part sounds horrible and manages to ruin an otherwise decent song. Rating: ★½☆☆☆
  • Aayo Re (Sunidhi Chauhan) - I dislike songs that take too long to start and this one takes a minute and a half to do so. And when the song does start you realize it wasn’t worth the wait anyways. Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
  • Saath (Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chauhan) - Although I am (or was rather) a fan of Anu Malik’s music, I dislike him as a singer. In fact to this day I wish he hadn’t sung Jaanam Samjha Karo himself. The song would have been so much better with some other male singer! A while ago I saw the promo for this song on Youtube. One of the comments read “eww horrible song“. Yup, that comment pretty much sums it up. Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
  • Aashiqui (Shaan) - This song is neither good or bad. Its just one of those “whatever” songs nobody really cares about. Rating: ½☆☆☆☆
  • Overall Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

This soundtrack will give Jimmy a run for its money as the worst soundtrack this year. It seems that instead of going with his own style, Anu Malik is trying too hard to replicate the styles of the current hit composers (Pritam, Himesh Reshammiya, VS, and SEL). Unfortunately this will not work. If he wants any chances at a comeback, he needs to stick with what he is comfortable with.

Anamika is a complete miss from Anu Malik.

Is Himesh’s Career Done?

Himesh Reshammiya

After rocking us with a record breaking number of hits only two years ago, it seems Himesh Reshammiya has vanished now. As he spends his sweet time working on one or two films every year, what do his fans do now?

His doubters are saying that he is history now, and his lucky run is over. They may have a point. It seemed he was a musical genius in 2006 when he was churning out hit after hit after hit. Every time you turned on the tv, one of his songs was playing. He was on top of the world…

But in 2007, that was not the case. He was actually struggling now. He had musical flops such as Red, Fool and Final, ShakaLaka Boom Boom, Good Boy Bad Boy and Fear. The only albums that were true hits in 2007 were Namaste London and Aap Ka Suroor.

Even people who once enjoyed his music were now saying they are tired of him and his voice. They were saying he is becoming too repetitive now. And that he is finally out of tunes now.

And now in 2008, Himesh has completely disappeared from the spotlight…

Is his run of glory over? Is he history now?

If you ask me, I say he is nothing close to done. For one, a celeb’s career is going down when people stop talking about him. But in Himesh Reshammiya’s case, he is still very much in the news. Many people are anxiously looking forward to his movies coming up. He still has more star power as an actor than more than half the actors in Bollywood. And he can’t even act!

Reason number 2…Himesh is mainly known for singing his own songs. Actually, the reason he started singing all of his songs is because he was selling. If you look at his career, he has always done whatever sells. He is the same man who came up with Teri Chuneriya Dil Le Gayi from Hello Brother, Nikamma Kiya Is Dil Ne from Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa, and the amazingly melodious Bhool Jaayenge Hum from Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye. He has always changed his style of music to fit in with the times. If listeners are tired of the type of music he gave in 2006, he will change his style again.

Third Reason? Any musician who can compose more than 30 (original) mega-hits in one year will be burnt out. Actually, he is the only composer who has been able to accomplish this feat. No other composer in history even comes close. Himesh needed some time off and to recollect himself - which he has done.

Love him or hate him, it is high time people stop criticizing Himesh Reshammiya. He is the real deal. A person can get lucky once or twice, but this man has been composing hits in the industry for a decade now - and 2006 was the year he finally became number 1.

Is Himesh’s Career Over?

Music Review: Jimmy

Director :
Raj N Sippy
Producer :
Nawman Malik & Salman Malik
Cast :
Mimoh Chakraborty, Zulfi Syed, Aashish Vidyarthi, Ehsaan Khan, Rati Agnihotri & Shakti Kapoor
Music Director : Anand Raj Anand, Bappa Lahiri & Vijay Verma
Lyricist/s :
Ranbir Pushp, Virag Mishra & Anand Raaj Anand
Cassettes and CD’s on :
Venus Music Records

Singers : Shaan, Anand Raaj Anand, Debojit, Kailash Kher, Vijay Verma & Kunal Ganjawala

jiimmy - mimoh

Mithunda’s son, Mimoh Chakraborty, makes an entry into Bollywood with a movie called Jimmy. Usually when the son of a star makes his entry into Bollywood, there is a lot of hype before the film releases. Not so much in this case.

Anand Raj Anand could have helped by giving some good music. Usually a reliable music director, he goes completely off the mark in this one.

Bappi Lahiri had his time - remember Gori Hain Kaliyaan (Aaj Ka Arjun) and Mahiya Teri Kasam (Ghayal)? Now his son, creatively named “Bappa” is getting a chance in the music scene. Unfortunately he isn’t making much of a mark as of yet.

Vijay Verma also composes one song in the album. Who is he? Chances are, we will never know.

  • Why Not Jimmy (Shaan) - For some songs, you don’t have to listen to them to know that they are bad. The title says it all! Anand Raj Anand’s music cannot save this song. No type of music can save a song called Why Not Jimmy. This is just another case of trying to be cool but failing. Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
  • Do Minute Mein (Shaan) - Bappa Lahiri is the composer in this one. The usual “pehli nazar mein de diya hai dil” is conveniently changed to “do minute mein de diya hai dil.” Music wise the song is stale, sounding like one of his father’s leftovers. Rating: ½☆☆☆☆
  • Jeevain Bulliyan Pe (Anand Raj Anand) - Finally something worth listening to! Anand Raj Anand comes very close to the border of his hugely popular Dil De Diya Hai from Masti but stops just short! This is my favorite from the album-or maybe I should say this is the only song I liked from the album. Being the best song in this soundtrack isn’t much of an achievement, but this song is actually a nice listen. Rating: ★★★½☆
  • Marhaba (Debojit)- Nahi Bappa nahii!! You have just started and already making songs like this? On the bright side Mimoh is a pretty good dancer. Rating: ½☆☆☆☆
  • Zamaane Se Keh Do (Kailesh Kher) - At this point this album is getting tiresome. This one is composed by Anand saab just in case anyone cares. Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
  • Yeh Hai Meri Dastaan (Vijay Verma) - The way Vijay Verma sings, he might as well be crying. Actually maybe he was. I get the feeling he won’t be composing very much after this song…and definitely not singing. This song maybe could have have been better if Mr. Verma hadn’t sung it himself! Rating: ★½☆☆☆
  • Aaya Hoon (Kunal Ganjawala) - Anand Raj Anand tries to be peppy in this one but I think he had made up his mind that he will not waste any actual good tunes for this movie. This one is just a filler but even a filler sounds good in a soundtrack like this. Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Overall Rating: ★½☆☆☆ Why did I waste my time listening to this? And why did I waste my time writing about how bad it is?

Well on the bright side, at least there was one good song - Jeevain Bulliyan Pe.

Why not Jimmy? Cause it sucks!
